  • 1981 – Greenwich Capital Markets, Inc (GCM) is founded by Ted Knetzger and William Rainer
  • 1984 – GCM is designated as a Primary Dealer by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York
  • 1986 – GCM commences asset-backed sales and trading
  • 1988 – GCM commences trading G-7 sovereign debt
  • 1988 – GCM is acquired by the Long Term Credit Bank of Japan
  • 1989 – London branch opened
  • 1990 – GCM becomes a section 20 Subsidiary
  • 1996 – Acquired by NatWest Group
  • 1999 – GCM obtains expanded Tier 2 powers permitting it to underwrite and deal in corporate debt, foreign sovereign debt, and commercial mortgage-backed securities
  • 2000 – NatWest Group acquired by The Royal Bank of Scotland. Ben Carpenter and Jay Levine appointed co-CEOs of Greenwich Capital
  • 2001 – Interest rate swap business launched
  • 2001 – CDO business launched
  • 2002 – “RBS Greenwich Capital” brand introduced
  • 2004 – Credit Markets Group launched
  • 2004 – Merged RBS NY and RBS Greenwich Capital derivatives businesses into a single Interest-Rate Derivatives platform
  • Jay Levine appointed CEO of RBS’ Global Banking & Markets business in North America
  • 2005 – North American arm of RBS’ Foreign Exchange business (FX) moves to Greenwich
  • 2006 – RBS Greenwich Capital celebrates its 25th Anniversary
  • 2006 – Firm breaks ground on its new headquarters in Stamford, CT
  • 2006 – RBS’ Aviation Capital team moves to Greenwich
  • 2006 – Formation of High Yield Capital Markets business
  • 2007 – RBS Sempra Commodities joint venture formed
  • 2008 – Symon-Drake Brockman Appointed CEO of RBS Global Banking & Markets Americas
